HELEN MAXINE SOUKUPMay 27, 1922 ~ May 28, 2012 Helen Maxine Soukup, age 90 of Detroit Lakes, MN formerly of Park Rapids, MN peacefully entered eternity with her loved ones at her side on Monday, May 28, 2012 at the Diamond Willow Assisted Living Center in Detroit Lakes, MN. Helen was born on May 27, 1922 in Lohrville, Iowa to Adolph and Clara (Waters) Abram. As a small child she moved with her family to Lakefield, MN where she attended public school. As a young woman, she ventured to Omaha, Nebraska where she gained employment. On September 4, 1942 Helen was united in marriage to Frank Edward Soukup. This union was blessed with 11 children: James, Robert, Mary Ann, Frank Jr., Timothy, Kathy, Richard, Bruce, Thomas, Barbara Jean and David. They made their home in the Omaha area for over 30 years where Helen devoted herself to making a warm and loving home for their family. In the mid-1970"s, following Frank"s retirement, they purchased the Northern Star Resort on Little Sand Lake northeast of Park Rapids, MN. After retiring from the resort they continued to make their home in northern Minnesota. Helen"s life was forever changed by the death of her husband, Frank in 1998. In 2006, Helen moved to Apple Valley, California where she lived with her daughter, Mary Ann. She later returned to Minnesota where she made her home in the Staples area until failing health caused her to move to Detroit Lakes. Throughout her lifetime, Helen enjoyed decorating her home and nurturing her garden into fruitful abundance. She also enjoyed raising beautiful flowers into colorful splendor to all to see and enjoy. She will be lovingly remembered by her 10 children: James (Bronwen) Soukup of Independence, MO, Robert (Carol) Soukup of Omaha, NE, Mary Ann (Jim) Skinner of Apple Valley, CA, Frank Jr. (Barbara) Soukup of Park Rapids, MN, Timothy (Elizabeth) Soukup of Cokato, MN, Kathleen (Ernie) Dennis of Menahga, MN, Bruce (Helen) Sailes of Hanover, PA, Thomas (Linda) Soukup of Omaha, NE, Barbara Jean (Dale) Derner of LeCenter, MN and David (Amparo) Soukup of Montgomery, MN; 23 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 1 step-sister, Violet DeFries of Windom, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; her son, Richard Alan who died in 1979 and her brother, James. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with Gary R. Garvey, Pastor officiating. Special music will be: "I Can Only Imagine", "Amazing Grace", "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "In the Garden". The casketbearers will be: Bryan Soukup, Frank Soukup III, Ron Soukup, Keith Soukup, Mark Skinner, Kathy Dennis, Casey Daugherty, Sally Derner, Sarah Derner, Bob Soukup and Tim Soukup. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. Interment will be held at the Lakeport Cemetery in Laporte, MN.
