MARJORIE FAYE “Nanny” AMICK May 27, 1920 – February 19, 2020 Marjorie Faye “Nanny” Amick, age 99, a longtime Park Rapids area resident, peacefully passed from this life to eternal life on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 surrounded by her loved ones in the comfort and familiarity of her home on Island Lake. Marjorie was referred to as “Nanny” by all who knew and loved her. She was born in Hatton, Saskatchewan, Canada to Willard and Rose (Oehlerking) Fish on May 27, 1920. At the age of 3, her family moved to Nebraska. She attended public school in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1938. On Oct. 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Louis Amick in Bronson, Iowa and they were blessed with 6 children: Sharron, Kenneth, Duane, Steven, Kathi, and Dennis. They later divorced and Nanny, as a single mother, moved to the Park Rapids area with her longtime companion, Vera Powell. They built a resort along Island Lake north of town, enlisting the help of her five children in the building process and the early years of operating the resort. Nanny and Vera continued operating the resort until their retirement in 2005. She enjoyed and encouraged the use of her resort by disabled veterans and always strongly supported the Wounded Warrior Project. She also enjoyed snowmobiling and was a longtime member of the Forest Rider Snowmobile Club. Nanny loved to play competitive games such as Cribbage, Skip-Bo, Mexican Train, and she always played to win. She loved to keep busy knitting or crocheting stocking caps and would give them to students at the Middle School that needed hats. She was a volunteer reader to students of Frank White Elementary for many years. Nanny was an accomplished seamstress who would work late at night sewing for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed attending school plays, band, and vocal concerts, and also maintained her annual membership with the Park Rapids Area Concert Series. Being ever with a youthful outlook, Nanny learned how to swim at the age of 60 and even waterskied in her later 60’s. She will be lovingly remembered by her 5 children: Sharron (DeRoy) Hedemark of Moville, Iowa, Kenneth (Ellen) Amick of Neenah, WI, Steven (Cinda Celander) Amick of Paradise Valley, Montana, Kathi Whiteside of Appleton, WI, Dennis (Debbie) Amick of Wilmette, Ill; 16 dearly loved grandchildren & 21 precious great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Betty Wall of Anaheim, CA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
