Eva Marie Beck

November 2, 1937 — August 6, 2020

EVA MARIE (THIELBAR) BECK November 2, 1937 – August 6, 2020 Eva Marie Beck, age 82 years, of the Park Rapids/Nevis area, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2020 at the Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, MN. Eva Marie Beck was born November 2, 1937 in Rice County, Minnesota to Raymond and Clarabelle Thielbar. She attended school in Faribault, Minnesota until her senior year where she graduated from Mound, Minnesota. Eva graduated from Robinson Cosmetology School in Minneapolis, followed by working in Excelsior. In 1958 she moved to Los Angeles to work, where she met and married her husband Carl. In 1959 they moved to Canoga Park, California, and raised daughter Carla and son Karl. In 1972 the family moved to northern Minnesota and owned what is now known as the Osage Bait and Tackle. Originally a truck stop/restaurant, later bait and laundromat, Eva was recognized by many in the area as hardworking and honest. After 27 years, they retired to Como Street in Park Rapids where they continued to enjoy the family, fishing, and singing karaoke in the local establishments and celebrated 55 years together. While in California, Eva took a cake decorating class, enjoying for many years making many cakes for family and friends. She was a Blue Bird and a Boy Scout leader when the children were young. In her youth, she was an exceptional ice-skater and roller-skater. Eva was an avid fisherman and made it her mission to teach her grand and great-grandchildren how to catch fish. Eva loved to dance and considered the cha-cha her favorite. In her retirement years, she discovered gardening, and flowers; saving seeds from “cosmal” flowers for the next year. In the later years with Carl, camping-fishing trips became popular for them. Eva had a strong belief in Scripture and what it said. She believed the Bible “had all the answers to a happy life”. She believed once you died, you’d sleep till Jesus Christ comes back. Her favorite verses were Romans 10:9-10. In her later years, Eva found her soul mate, Bob Schmitt. They spent many winters in his motor home parked in Big River, California. Together they enjoyed singing karaoke, playing with the cat, and meeting new people. Summers were spent in the Nevis and Park Rapids area, reacquainting with friends and family. Eva is survived by her daughter, Carla Messmann of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; son, Karl (Louise) Beck of Park Rapids, MN; grandchildren, Karl (Andrea) Beck Jr. of LaPorte, MN, Lee Anna (Ryan) Christensen of Florida, Hunter and Skyler Messmann of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; great-grandchildren: Desmond, Lilyan, Ronan, William, and Grace; one sister, Doris (Dan) Mitchell of Park Rapids, MN; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl A Beck; brother, Robert A Thielbar; sister-in-law, Jeanne Thielbar; son-in-law, Alan J Messmann; and nephews, Thomas and David Thielbar. Eva’s quote “Life was good.” Memorial services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, August 22, 2020 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home, Park Rapids, MN with visitation beginning one hour prior to the services.
