Eugene “Gene” Moe of Nevis, age 91, passed away at Diamond Willow–Evergreen in Park Rapids on Saturday, March 14, 2026, with family at his side.
Eugene A. Moe was born December 8, 1934, in Mayville, North Dakota, to parents Henry A. and Alpha E. (Rockne) Moe. He was the oldest of seven children. Eugene graduated from Mayville High School with the class of 1952. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at the University of North Dakota. Gene then joined the U.S. Army and served honorably. He married Mary Fowler on June 7, 1964. Into this union, two children were born, Elizabeth and Paul.
He worked for the Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Agency in downtown Minneapolis for 35 years and retired at age 59. Gene and Mary then moved to their dream home on Lake Belle Taine in Nevis, Minnesota. It was here that they created beautiful memories with their loved ones. Gene loved to play cards at the casino with anyone who would join him. Gene and Mary spent 56 years of marriage together before Mary passed away in 2020.
Gene will be missed most for his dry sense of humor, his love of puzzles, and his unmistakable laugh. Eugene’s love of puzzles came from his mother, Alpha. Family members fondly recall them around the kitchen table at the farmhouse in Mayville, feverishly working on either crosswords or jigsaw puzzles. He was also a known mathematician, and ironically, he died on Pi Day, 3.14.2026.
Gene is survived by his children, Elizabeth Moe and Paul (Suzi) Moe; grandchildren, Casey Higgins, Ellie Nyberg, Michael Holec, Alexa Klunder, and Hailey Klunder; siblings, John Moe, Charles (Shirley) Moe, Evelyn Pederson, and Thomas Moe (Sue Johnson); sister-in-law, Doris Moe; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Moe; brothers, Herman and Richard Moe; sister-in-law, Mitchie Moe; and brother-in-law, Richard Felton.
