Dorothy Kay Tieden

October 24, 1940 — May 31, 2021

Dorothy Kay Tieden, age 80 of Bemidji, formerly of Lake George, MN peacefully passed from this life to eternal life on May 31, 2021 at the Gold Pine Nursing Home in Bemidji on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021. Dorothy was born in Mapleton, MN to George F. and Alice (Hasbrook) Penhiter on October 24, 1940. She grew up and attended schools in Mapleton, graduating from the Mapleton Public High School with the Class of 1958. She then ventured north to Bemidji, MN where she started a bookkeeping business which served a number of local businesses. Dorothy was a gifted business woman. She started and operated the Coffee Cup Café in Turtle River for a number of years. She was married to Wendell Nielson and they raised a daughter, Lynn and a son, Robin. They made their home in Bemidji. Later, on April 22, 1977, she was united in marriage to Arthur Ervin Tieden of the Lake Alice/Becida area. They were blessed with two sons: Dan and Jeremy. Dorothy devoted herself to making a loving home for her husband and children. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious Strawberry-Rhubarb Crisp and many more of her delicious creations. Her ambition and her love for cooking, baking and serving others was the driving force behind she and Arthur starting the Lake George Store and Café. In the mid- 1980’s they sold their business and built a home on Evergreen Lake where they operated a strawberry farm and also cared for foster children. Dorothy always loved the outdoors; especially when she could be out on the lake fishing or working in her garden nurturing her vegetables into fruitful abundance to can or share with family and friends. She always loved to bake and was asked to design and bake many cakes for weddings or other special occasions. She endured the heart ache of losing her husband, Arthur in 2012. Shortly after his death she retired to Bemidji where she has lived ever since. She enjoyed traveling and one of her more memorable trips was to Alaska where she enjoyed fishing for large Alaskan Halibut. She enjoyed living independently until just these past six weeks when her failing health caused her to move to the Gold Pine Home in Bemidji. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her three sons: Robin (Terri) Nielsen of Gravois Mills, MO, Dan (Hannah) Tieden of Alpha, WI and Jeremy (Lisa) Tieden of Bemidji; her five step-children: Michael (MeriBeth)Tieden of MO, Julie (Rod) George of Park Rapids, MN, Karen (Tim) Kinar of Farminton, MN, Nancy (Clay) Moorhead of Mason, Ohio and Melissa (Lowell) Koebernick of Menahga, MN; 27 dearly loved grandchildren; 22 precious great grandchildren; two sisters: Patricia (Tom) Myers of Ogilvie, MN and Ruth Mettler of Springfield, Illinois; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn Nielsen who died in 1993; her husband, Arthur; her brother, George “Bud” and two sisters, Betty Janske and Barbara Wilson.
