Dale Raymond
Schaefer
October 18, 1936 – March 31, 2026
Dale Schaefer, 89, of Park Rapids, died unexpectedly at home on March 31, 2026.
Dale Raymond Schaefer was born on October 18, 1936 in Red Wing, Minnesota, to Harold and Erma (Mesner) Schaefer. He was the fourth of eight children. On a winter day in February 1960, he was united in marriage to Janet Ilene “Jan” Mills, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. Together, they were blessed with five children: Jim, Sheri, Gary, Karen and Greg. Dale was a proud grandfather to 20 and a great-grandfather to 21 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. Dale was raised on a dairy farm and carried on the tradition of farming for many years. Later, he and Jan transitioned into hotel management, where they continued to build a life centered on hard work and connection with others. He found great happiness in the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling. Above all, Dale cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He took special pride in teaching them life’s simple but meaningful lessons, including how to tie their shoes. In 2014, Dale and Jan retired and made their home in Osage, Minnesota, to be closer to family. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time outdoors with his dog and in the company of family and friends.
Dale will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, and the quiet joy he found in life’s everyday moments.
Dale is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Janet Schaefer; children, Jim Schaefer, Sheri (Donald) Dornbusch, Gary (Jenny) Schaefer, Karen (Mark) Holtz; and Greg (Cerilda) Schaefer; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; siblings, Norman Schaefer, Bonita Hokineson, Barbra Gulickson and Gaylon Schaefer; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Geraldine Walkier, Lowell Schaefer, and Shirly Braaten.
