Lois Marie Yliniemi

Lois Yliniemi, age 83, a longtime resident of Osage, MN, passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2016 in Detroit Lakes, MN. Lois was born on February 25, 1932 in Frazee, MN to William and Amalia (Fischer) Maves. Her family moved to the Park Rapids area in 1943 where she graduated from Park Rapids Area High School with the Class of 1950. Lois went on to earn her teaching certificate and committed herself to teaching in country schools in the Sebeka and Frazee areas for over 10 years. While teaching at the Frazee District Country School #83 she met and fell in love with Reuben Yliniemi. The young couple was married on June 24, 1961. They were blessed with three children: Paul, Gail and Bruce. They purchased the family dairy farm and engaged in farming in the Toad Lake Area for many years. Lois was an active member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman where she carried on her love for teaching children through serving as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and Release Time Teacher. Lois also served as the church Sunday school Superintendent and in many other church capacities. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, puzzles, knitting, cooking and baking. Lois enjoyed supporting her children in their many activities growing up. She was deeply saddened by the death of her husband, Reuben in 2008. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Paul (Julie) Yliniemi of Osage, MN, Gail (Steve) White of Wolverton, MN and Bruce Yliniemi of Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin; her sister, Mildred Prescott of Kent, WA and two brothers: Bill Maves and Dale Maves both of Park Rapids; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to being preceded in death by her husband, Lois was also preceded in death by her parents; in-laws; two toddler sisters; one nephew; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, February 19, 2016 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman with the Rev. Scott Muehlberg officiating. Helen Laine will serve as the organist. The casket bearers will be Mike Barlow, Brian Haataja, Alan Hudacek, Gene Maves, Rick Laine and Kelly Yliniemi. The honorary casket bearers will be Isak Yliniemi and David Prescott. Interment will be made next to her husband, Reuben in the Snellman Cemetery. Following the service, the Gethsemane Lutheran Church will host a lunch for all. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM Thursday at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with a prayer service at 7:30 PM and will continue at the church on Friday beginning one hour prior to the service.
