George Tapper

June 16, 1925 — March 4, 2016

George L. Tapper, age 90, a long time Park Rapids, MN area resident, peacefully entered eternity on Friday, March 4, 2016 during a brief stay at the Heritage Cottages in Park Rapids with his son and daughter-in-law at his side. George was born on June 16, 1925 in Milbank, SD to Ora and Irene (Ackerman) Tapper. He attended public school in Milbank. As a young man, George worked for a Milbank area farmer until entering the United States Army on March 16, 1945. He proudly served his country in the Philippines during the final chapter of World War II until receiving his honorable discharge on December 17, 1946. George returned to Milbank for a brief stay until venturing north to Park Rapids, MN in 1947. He loved the lakes and forests of this area and once settled never felt compelled to return to Milbank. George gained employment with the Rockcrete Company in Park Rapids for several years. On December 10, 1949, George was united in marriage to Betty Pollworth and their union was blessed with one son, Gary Lee who was born on January 8, 1951. George began working on the Dr Runyon Mink Farm east of Park Rapids and in short order was appointed manager of its operation. Later, George went to work driving semi-trucks for David Konshock for a time, before beginning working as head custodian at the Park Rapids Area High School in a career that spanned the rest of his working years until his retirement. George was a founding member of the Faith Baptist Church in Park Rapids where he served in many capacities; but, will be most remembered as the head usher who warmly greeted church attendees by name each Sunday. His life was deeply saddened by the death of his precious wife Betty in October of 2012. George was actively involved with the mission of the Park Rapids Area Food Bank for many years. Above all, George devoted his life to his wife for 63 years, Betty and his son, Gary and daughter-in-law, Cindy who he loved with all his heart. He is survived by his son, Gary and daughter-in-law, Cindy Tapper of Sun Prairie, WI; sister-in-law, Ruby Becker of Park Rapids; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. George was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; one brother, John and three sisters: Elsie, Edith and Eldoris. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the Faithbridge Church with the Reverend David Cripe and Rev. Abe Cardosa officiating. The organist will be Jan Henderson and the vocalists: Bill and Jan Lundsten who will sing, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “What A Day That Will Be”. The casket bearers will be; nephews: Duane Becker, Dale Becker and Gene Corle and Friend, Pat Amberg. Military Honors will be conducted by the Star of The North Marine Corps League under the command of Mr. David Free. Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery of Park Rapids, MN. A luncheon will be hosted for all by the Faithbridge church following the service. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids and for one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to the Faithbridge Church in Park Rapids, MN.
