Evanne Rose Vasey

   Evanne Vasey, age 57, died peacefully in her home in Sebeka, MN, on Saturday, March 12, 2016.    Evanne was born in Davenport, Iowa, on February 23, 1959 to Evan and Esther Vasey. She grew up with 9 siblings and together the family moved throughout Iowa and Pennsylvania, until 1974 when they moved to rural Nimrod.  Evanne attended Sebeka High School and graduated in 1977.              In 1984, she married her high school sweetheart, Alan Schermerhorn, and together they had two beautiful daughters: Kadence and Samantha.   Evanne graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1989. She worked as a journalist for the Review Messenger and as a substitute teacher for Sebeka School and the surrounding areas, until she accepted a position in Sebeka as High School English teacher.  She devoted a total of 23 years to the Sebeka School. Most weeknights and weekends, Evanne could be found grading papers, drawing up lesson plans, or arranging yearbook photos, as for many years she held the position of the yearbook advisor. She had an uncanny ability to bring out the best in her students, capitalizing on their strengths.   In 2011, she received her Master of Science degree through Southwest Minnesota State University, and an Excellence in Action Research Award for her thesis paper.   In 2013, she retired from teaching due to complicated health conditions. In her later years, she fought a hard battle with her health, but she faced the struggles with grace and courage.   Evanne loved to read. She could often be found curled up on a couch or sitting under a tree devouring a book, oblivious to the world around her. Her extensive knowledge of authors/books was an inspiring element for the students she taught.    She will be remembered most as a wonderful mother and sister. She spent the last couple years spending time with her mother and helping with her grandsons.    Evanne is survived by two daughters: Kadence Schermerhorn and Samantha Schermerhorn both of Eden Prairie, MN; two grandchildren: Noah and Brayden Limon; her siblings: Autumn (Clint) Linn of Longview, WA, Junelle (Mark) Gustafson of Alexandria, MN, Raina (Tom) Riedesel and Karla Vasey both of White Bear Lake, MN, Blaise (Lisa) Vasey of rural Sebeka, MN, Barth (Patty) Vasey of Sauk Centre, MN, Shereen (Dan) Gilyard of Coon Rapids, MN, Rona (John) Schleder of Stillwater, MN, Leatha (Mike) Lannes of Big Lake, MN as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.    Evanne was preceded in death by her parents Evan and Esther Vasey.    A private family memorial service will be held later this spring.  In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for the donations to be made to the Evanne Vasey Memorial Scholarship fund at the Sebeka National Bank.
