Vernie Melvin Anderson, age 90, a lifelong resident of Sebeka, MN passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Henning, MN.Vernie was born on August 9, 1925 on his family's home near Sebeka to Frank and Lydia (Roiko) Anderson. He graduated from the Sebeka High School in 1944. Vernie went on to proudly serve his nation as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the Sebeka area, where he was proud to call home, where he worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1990. He was united in marriage to Ellen French on May 17, 1969. They enjoyed their lives together until her death on February 7, 2002. He was a long time member of the Sebeka United Methodist Church. As an avid lifelong baseball fan, Vernie was affectionately known around Sebeka as "Mr. Baseball". He was proud to have been a player and manager of both the Sebeka town and the American Legion baseball teams. In recognition of his many years of dedication to the game he loved, he was elected into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Cloud in 1972.Vernie is survived by his brother: Donald (Lenore) Anderson of Minneapolis; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.Vernie was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ellen.Services have been set for 11 AM Saturday, August 12, 2016, at the Sebeka United Methodist Church with Rev. John Fair officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be next to his wife, Ellen at the Sebeka West Cemetery. Following the service a luncheon will be hosted by the women of the Sebeka United Methodist Church.
