DAVID E. WAGGONER
February 11, 1943 ~ March 3, 2013
David E. Waggoner, age 70 of Park Rapids, MN passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones, at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
David was born on February 11, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas to Cecil and Lucille (Campbell) Waggoner. It was in Wichita that he attended public schools and graduated from the Valley Center High School in 1961. Dave went on to attend Kansas State University on a football scholarship. He also attended Eldorado State Jr. College where he continued playing football. He entered the United States Navy in 1967, where he proudly served his country as a radio man in Viet Nam on river boats until receiving his honorable discharge in 1968. He continued serving in the Naval reserves until 1972. David completed his college education at Wichita State University where he earned his degree in business with a minor in accounting. On January 14, 1971, Dave was united in marriage to Patricia Kay Downing in Wichita. This union was blessed with 3 children: Debra, Edward and Nancy. In 1972, Dave began a 25 year long career with the K-Mart Corporation where he worked in management until his retirement in 1997. Dave and Patricia then retired to the Park Rapids area where they bought Reeds’ Sporting Goods store and returned it to its historical name, Fullers Sporting Goods. They operated this business until 2003. Dave’s love for the outdoors brought him to Park Rapids. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who always looked forward to spending time with family and friends on the water or in the woods. He loved following the Minnesota Twins and watching as many football games as time would allow. Dave was a long time member of the Park Rapids Lions Club and the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post #212 in Park Rapids. Above all, Dave devoted his life to his precious wife, Pat, his 3 children and his 4 beloved grandchildren who he enjoyed following in their school events.
Dave is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia of Park Rapids; his 3 children: Debra (Dave) Bannerman of Park Rapids, Edward (Kim) Waggoner of Park Rapids and Nancy Waggoner of St. Paul; 4 grandchildren: Jake and Carly Waggoner and Joseph and Liz Bannerman of Park Rapids; 1 brother, Clark (Sandy) Waggoner of Sapulpa, Oklahoma and 1 sister, Norma Waggoner of Bartlesville, OK as well as numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Lucille.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, MN. Visitation will be held from 12-1:30 P.M at the funeral home on Wednesday. We are so going to miss our old buddy. I loved listening to Dave and Dennis talk about their teenage years. It made me wonder how they ever lived long enough to grow up. But, they did and they turned out to be wonderful men. Patty, we are thinking of and praying for you in this time of great loss. Our condolences for your whole family.

Patty and Family, I am so sorry that we weren't able to come for the funeral but with Gary not being able to drive very well and me being scared of the roads, it wasn't an option. Dearest Patty and family: We are so sorry to hear of your huge loss. Dave will be missed by everyone who knew him. He brought such fun, joy, love and peace to us all. I don't need to tell you what a true soldier he was all the way to the end. Patty, I can't imagine your anguish, but pray our Lord will strengthen you to carry on and keep smiling. All I can think of is what a fun reunion Dad (Joe Downing) and Dave are having. So sorry we will miss the service! We really wanted to come, but feel it's not wise with this weather.
God bless and console each of you.
Love always,
Bev

It's hard to write condolences, they seem so canned. However, I can write about David and what he meant to my father (Joe). He would talk for days about your visiting and for days after you left. Davd was a blessing to my family. We are very sorry.
