GLEN BETTENHAUSEN
June 21, 1919 ~ February 15, 2013

Glen was born on June 21, 1919 in Princeton, Nebraska. He was the middle child of five boys born to Arnold and Anna Bettenhausen. Glen was the blonde haired boy that everybody loved and had many wonderful memories of growing up on their Nebraska farm. Glen graduated from Hickman High School in 1937. Glen married Lorain Birdie Barnett in Hickman, Nebraska on June 22, 1940. They were blessed with six children: Dona (Jerry) Skinness, Akeley, MN, Larry (Connie) Bettenhausen, Venice, FL, Glenda (Dan) Mason, Mason City, IL, David (Barb) Bettenhausen, Pasadena, MD and Debbie (Steve) Sileven, Tucson, AZ. Another son, Rodney died in a bicycle accident at age 9 in 1961. He leaves 11 Grandchildren and 21 Great-grandchildren. One grandchild, Carl Bettenhausen, lost his life at age 27 in New Orleans, LA. Glen served in the Marines during WWII and fought in Iwo Jima. He never spoke much regarding the war except to say that he vowed that his life would be different if he got out of his fox hole. Meanwhile in Lincoln, NE, a little congregation of the Church of Christ was taking Lorain, Dona and Larry under their wing. Glen told her to stay with those people and when he returned home they gave their lives to the Lord. Glen soon took his family to Searcy, Arkansas and enrolled at Harding College where he prepared himself for the ministry. He served churches in Nebraska, Minnesota and Arizona. He was instrumental in the foundation of York College in York, Nebraska, serving as the first chairman of the board. In his later years, he and Lorain spent several happy years as caretakers at Flaming Pine Youth Camp near Togo and Cook, Minnesota. Glen and Lorain semi-retired to Arizona to serve with churches in Oracle, San Manuel and Tucson and lived close to Debbie and her family. They moved back to Willmar, MN from Arizona in 2003 to be near Dona and Jerry. Lorain suffered a stroke and was in Bethesda nursing home in Willmar the last 6 years of her life. Glen faithfully visited her almost every day until her death in February 2010. In the fall of 2011, the Lord presented the perfect place by Chamberlain, MN for Jerry and Dona and their three dogs to move to and bring Glen with them. His last year and a half were spent enjoying the view of the woods, holding Gracie, their small poodle, in his lap and being near Brian and Stacey, his grandson. He loved hearing Brian's music, both at the house and at Terrapin. His final year he enjoyed excellent help from St. Joseph's Hospice program. He was a very peaceful and contented man, trusting God throughout his life.

I remember Glen when I was a young boy growing up in MN, at camps and youth rallies. A few men like him helped shape my love for the Truth and to always defend and protect God's Word from liberalism and the like. My thoughts and prayers are for the family.

To the Children of Brother Glen Bettenhausen:

I am so sorry I did not try to find your daddy before he passed away. My family and I sure did love him. Glen worked with my daddy, Harold Cash, in Grand Island, NE to help get the Church of Christ started there. Glen and Daddy traveled to OK and TX raising money and selling church bonds to be able to fund the construction of a church building for the congregation in Grand Island, NE.

On the Sunday after Glen passed away, we were attending worship services at the Eastwood Church of Christ in Hutchinson, KS. During the morning lesson, the preacher, Brother Jimie-Wray Mead, mentioned 'if not for Glen Bettenhausen, he probably would not be standing before us.'

I spoke to Brother Mead after services. He then told me that Brother Glen had bapitized his parents, as well as, his grandparents in MN.

I had a good visit with your parents in Grand Island, NE at the church's 50th year reunion.

Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with you all.

Glen was such a blessing, influencing our lives and those of our children in so many ways. Ron credits Glen and Lorain with teaching us that the church is truly a family. He had a gift for knowing just what a child needed and saying just the right thing to encourage him or her. I have heard Ron quote Glen many times when facing church problems: "Solve the problem but save the soul," he often said. He had so much wisdom and shared it with compassion and understanding, never with condescension. He has left a great legacy. We know that you are comforted by many wonderful memories and by the faith that you shared with Glen and Lorain. Love, Ron & Louise

I loved both your parents and will always remember the birthday song he taught us at Ina Road Church of Christ:
A happy birthday to you.
A happy birthday to you.
May you find Jesus near
Every day of the year.
A happy birthday to you.
A happy birthday to you.
May God bless you
The whole year through.

And also Lorain's fantastic cinammon rolls!

We have all been so blessed to have had them in our lives.

Glen was a very significant influence on my life during my formative years in Mankato. He was a great teacher, was key to many years at singing school, and was a key influence on me attending Harding which certainly changed my life. My years with him at FPYC as a counselor were special...especially when I convinced him to wear a toga, wreath and run into the old ball field with a flaming torch to start the summer FPYC olympics of 1984. What a great smile and laugh. Miss him and look forward to seeing him again.

God bless you his family in your loss.

To all my cousins, our thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm sure that all of the Bettenhausen boys have found each other up in heaven. While letting go is difficult, know that Glen is in a better spot where any physical limitations he may have been experiencing in this life will no longer be a part of his life in heaven.

Take Care & God Bless,

Linda, Kevin, and Elena Renner

We feel your parents are with our parents Harold and Velma Cash working on some project for the Lord. We so enjoyed being with them at the Grand Island 50th Church reunion a few years back. We know you will really miss your precious Daddy. He was such a great song leader, teacher, preacher and wonderful friend to all of us. We are keeping all of you in our prayers.
Love, Eddie and Dee Dee

We know you have suffered a great loss and will miss Glen until you meet again in Heaven. As a fellow Preacher, Glen was such an encouragement to me & many others in MN. He was a true servant of Christ. Glen was a leader in our Preacher Fellowships for many years. We worked together on several ministries and I have never met a man that was a finer Christian example than Glen. The fruit of God's Spirit was evident in Glen Bettenhausen. We will miss you Brother!

Dona,

I was recently looking at some old Kearney Bible Camp pictures, and one of them featured you and Judy Swanson Brewster, me and a cousin of mine standing in front of our cabin. Fond memories. May our Lord console you with the loss of your father.

Thank you Lord for Mr. Bettenhousen's life and the influence he had on me in my early years at Flaming Pine Youth Camp. His love for God and people was felt without him saying a word. What a beautiful life!

Sorry to hear of you Dad's passing. He was a wonderful man and he and your Mom meant so much to our family. I probabaly would not have ever convinced my parents to let me marry my husband of 47 years if Glenn hadn't helped me. My sister Julia called me this morning to tell me she had met someone that your Dad brought to Christ and we were talking about your family so I started checking the internet and found his passing. Blessing and Comfort to all of you.

On behalf of Marine Corps League Detachment #1109, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the family. It will be an honor and priviledge to provide one of our nations heroes with the full military honors he earned. As the last verse of the Marine Corps Hymn says" when you look upon Heaven scenes, you will find the streets guarded by United States Marines." Quite a peaceful picture.
