FLORENCE VIOLET TANDE
May 18, 1920 ~ May 19, 2012
Florence Violet (Engdahl) Tande was born to Henry and Thea Engdahl on May 18, 1920 and died peacefully one day after her 92nd birthday following a short battle with cancer in Park Rapids, MN.
Florence was raised on the family farm near Darfur, MN. She married Joseph Tande in 1938 and they settled in St. James. A daughter, Beverly, died at age 4. Their son, James, was born in 1947. The family moved to Fairmont in 1957 where they lived until retirement. She was a cook in the Fairmont school system for over 20 years, and was actively involved in the church community at Grace Lutheran. Florence and Joe retired to a home on Prairie Lake near Grand Rapids, MN. This was a special time in her life during which she spent lots of hours with her three beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Susan and Ben. After many years on the lake they moved to Walker to be closer to family. In 1992, “her Joe” died and she had missed him every day since. Later she moved to Park Rapids. Florence loved her family. Her sharp wit, easy smile and sense of humor made her a great friend. She never missed a family birthday, always had hugs and made her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren feel special. She lived a long life and was ready to meet her maker. She (and her best in the world lefse) will be missed.
She is survived by her son, Jim (Kathy) of Park Rapids; grandchildren: Sarah (David) Glad of Burnsville, Susan (Mike) Martin of St. Cloud and Ben (Kate) Tande of Walker; seven great-grandchildren and her brother, Henry Engdahl of Butterfield; numerous other family members and friends.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; daughter, Beverly; three brothers: V.H., Leonard and Herbert.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, MN with Pastor Sara Jensen officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Mount Hope Cemetery in St. James, MN.
Jim and Family - So sorry to hear about Florence. Our family has many fond memories of both your parents growing up nextdoor to them. Our favorite is the time Joe took my brothers and I all fishing, and somehow all 3 of us ended up in the water! It has been fun keeping in touch with your mom over all these years ~ she loved her family and all the grandkids.

Jim and family, I don't know if you even remember me, but I saw in the Fairmont Sentinel that your mother recently passed away. I remember her so well as cook in the Fairmont schools while I was growing up and also remember her and Joe so well from his Earl Draper and Sons days. I remember visiting "Up North" at least once after they moved up there, but am sorry to say it has been a long time since we have connected. Dad (Chuck) passed away a year and a half ago and mother 22 1/2 years ago. I remember they thought a lot of your parents as I did. They had a lot of good times together. I particularly remember how proud they were of you, Jim. I just wanted you to know I have fond memories of your folks and you and wish to extend my deepest sympathy in your loss. As a side, I was just in Ceylon last Saturday night and saw your picture I think in a Ceylon Red's picture at Legends--and commented that I remembered you, Jim. It is a coincidence that today I would see your mother's obituary in the paper and once again think of your family fondly.
With deepest sympathy,
Cheryl and Jon Rippke, Mankato, MN

As one of several retired pastors at Florence's congregation, Calvary Lutheran Church, Park Rapids, it was my privilege, during recent years' winter months, to bring Communion to her at her apartment. And now, what a fine trip it was to follow the online photo album of Florence and Joseph's life together and her celebration times with siblings and the next generations of Engdahl/Tandes. She was surely, in a quiet and unassuming way, a strong part of communities, school district, churches, and family in the stewardship of her life. Thank you, Lord, for Florence.
