Harold LeRoy Albee, 93, formerly of Park Rapids and Newton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the VA Home in Minneapolis, MN.
Harold was born April 13, 1918 in Newton, Iowa, to Allen and Julia (Dodd) Albee. During high school, Harold was a stand-out athlete in football, basketball and track. He went on to attend Drake University in Des Moines where he studied business and accounting. While at Drake he served as captain of the men’s track team and set a world record in the Men’s 400 meter relay. He later went to Officer Candidate School and became an Infantry Company Commander (captain). He was awarded a bronze star and purple heart for his heroism in battle. His family loved hearing his amazing stories about his time in Europe during WWII. As an accountant and comptroller, Harold worked at Maytag Corp. in Newton, Munsingwear Co. in Minneapolis, TWA Airlines in Kansas City, American Airlines in New York City and back to Minneapolis where he retired from Farmhand Co. in 1982. In 1968, he purchased a resort on Little Sand Lake near Park Rapids, which he and his family operated until 1992. Harold was an avid fisherman who loved to match wits with the wily catfish, walleye, bass, muskie and northern pike. He also loved his Minnesota Twins and enjoyed hunting.
He will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Julie (Dale) Lusti of Buffalo, Minn., Katy Harris, Ellen Albee and Buzz Albee of Park Rapids, and David (Angela) Albee of St. Paul; six grandchildren: Rich Lusti of Champlin, Liz Lusti of Inver Grove Heights, Chris (Layla) Albee, Pat Albee and Jim Harris of Park Rapids, and Dr. Nathan (Jolene) Harris of Hopkins; five great grandchildren and brother, Robert Albee, Ocala, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucille W. Albee, brother, William, sister, Mary and nephew, Doug.
Visitation will be held 10:00-11:00am with service at 11:00am on Monday, June 13 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids. To my extended Albee Family ~ We have lost our oldest patriarch and such a wonderful man. Uncle Harold was always welcoming, warm and full of stories to share with us about his childhood in Newton, his fishing escapades and of course all of you my cousins whom he loved so dearly and proudly cherished. I am grieving with you all today because we will miss his gentle spirit and presence here with us. Let us cling to each other and our memories of great times he happily hosted for all of us at the resort. We honor his service to our country and all his work and endeavors for his family. His passing along with Lucille, Bill, Mary, my mom Sharon and Doug are painful to endure but give us strength too as we continue on for those who we now must care for. Let us follow his lead and love and cherish each other always. ~ Your cousin Deb

remember that I am the sister of Sharon Albee. We remember with much happiness the
summers at Little Sand where Lucille would
have the crawdaddy contest in the afternoons and Harold arrived on Friday!
Those were very memorable times for our children. Your Father was a very gentle man.

My prayers and thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time. After having the honor of getting to know Harold and Lou the one thought that keeps coming to mind is how much he loved his family. You could always see it in his eyes and smile. I also think that it is so wonderful that even at age of 92 he still got to go to the Twins games and duck hunting with his family!!! I think he was truly blessed with loving family and know he continues to appreciate and love you all in spirit! May all your beautiful memories ease the loss.
Blessings,
Heidi, Alex and Marcus
