  JAMES D. “Jim” PARKS
September 22, 1939 ~ March 14, 2011

James D. “Jim” Parks, age 71 of Park Rapids, MN passed away on Monday, March 14, 2011 at St. Josephs Area Hospital in Park Rapids, MN.
Jim was born on September 22, 1939 to Esther Long in Osage, MN. He was raised by Esther and Buster Long in Arago township north of Park Rapids where his family owned and operated the Arago Truck Stop. Jim attended Park Rapids High School. Upon completion of his schooling he ventured to Grand Marais, MN where he worked as a lumber jack. Jim then moved to Minneapolis where he gained employment with the Gold Medal Beverage Company. It was with good fortune that Jim happened to meet Barbara Miegel. The two became fast friends and on September 30, 1960 they were united in marriage. This union was blessed with three daughters: Debbie, Sandy, and Joan. They made their home in Mounds View, MN and later in South Haven, MN. Jim became a member of the Sheet Medal Local Union #10 which helped locate work for him. He was most recently employed by the Naegele Outdoor Advertising Company. In 1964, Jim and his family vacationed in the Black Hills of South Dakota; a place they would return to again and again. Jim fell in love with the buffalo. His fascination with this magnificent animal continued throughout his life. Jim and Barb were members of the Dry Riders Motorcycle Club in Moose Lake, MN. They enjoyed the many road trips taken with the Dry Riders. In 1986, Jim was in a motorcycle accident that left him with a physical disability. His spirit was strong and with the help of his family he continued to ride on a tricycle motorcycle. By their 25th wedding anniversary, Jim and Barb had visited 25 states. Jim enjoyed fishing and tried to share his love of the sport with his daughters. He had a special relationship with his dog, Hutch who kept him company when his family couldn’t be there. He loved the outdoors; especially when he could be deer hunting. He also enjoyed taking his family out to eat. Most of all, he treasured being with his family who he loved with all his heart.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Barb of Park Rapids; his father, Buster Long of Park Rapids; his 3 daughters: Debbie (Arnie Terwey) Reinert of St. Joseph, MN, Sandy (Brian) Ophus of Hutchinson, MN and Joan (Dan) Schmitz of Eden Valley, MN; 6 grandchildren: Craig (Tanya) Reinert, Randy (Tabitha) Reinert, Tony (Kate Henning) Smith, Marvin Schmitz, Robin (Josh) Heinz and Nicholas Schmitz; several great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother and son-in-law, Ken Smith in 1994.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, MN with Reverend Lee Kantonen officiating. Thanks So much for the kind words & awesome reminders of my dad. He was a gentle caring, hard working, loving, giving , teaching individual, with a bark worse than his bite!!! :) Dad is "finally" at peace & not battling with the daily fights of the cane & brace which hindered him for over 26 years...he is free of pain & can walk that is the best part that my heart can handle of me not having my dad on earth anymore. Mom is doing o.k. Sandy & I keep a watchful eye on her, dad will be missed as anyone who losses a loved one knows this time is NOT easy & seems to pass way TOO slow, we can only smile & bring our hearts some peace knowing that we will see him again one day in a much better place...love you all Deb :)

I had the pleasure of teaching Jimmy Dale(as we called him then) when he attended the one room Arago country school. His good sense of humor and ready wit made him very popular with the other students. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family.

Barb, Deb, Sandy & Joan,

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Just wanted you all to know how much I enjoyed your friendship over the years. I remember getting to the cabin on Friday night and Jim would have already mowed the lawn so dad could come out and play right away. I also remember driving up and seeing Jim in a giant new hole he was finishing for our outhouse. And I remember the tears in his eyes when he came to tell us my grandma had a heart attack. Jim had such a tender heart, but he didn't want most people in on that secret!
I am positive your family deepened my love for animals...how else would I have become friends with a pig? I would have never had the opportunity to own a horse if not for you guys. Your family always took our Easter bunnies and chicks...so glad I didn't know as a kid that we all ended up eating the bunnies and my friendly pig! Such good times! Thank you for enriching my life in so many ways...

I am so glad that Jim was a part of my life. I really enjoyed some good laughs with him growing up and into my adult life. I know that he is in peace now...I'm sure my mom loved having him show up to her birthday celebration in heaven. I loved the youtube post. It made it feel like I was at the service. If there is anything I can do; you know how to get a hold of me. I will be seeing you in June. We love you!

Hi Barb, Debbie, Joan, Sandy and families,

Jeff and I are so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. We have such fond memories of all of you. We so enjoyed your company at the cabin on Lake Francis. Jim was a great friend and mentor to Jeff. Jim will be missed by so many. In the past years he showed much courage and managed with a sense of humor as he always had such great wit. There comes a time when we just need a long rest. Take care Barb, and keep in touch.
