 CANDACE ANN “Candy” NELSON
February 2, 1947 ~ February 2, 2011

Candace Ann “Candy” Nelson, of Menahga, MN, passed away on her 64th birthday with her husband, Richard by her side, on February 2, 2011 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Candy was born on February 2, 1947 in Davenport, Iowa to Lowell and Velma Sperrier. She attended Davenport Schools graduating with the class of 1965. Candy was united in marriage at an early age in a union that blessed her with three wonderful children: Kimberly, Brad, and Jeff. She worked hard at providing a warm and loving home for her growing family. She was employed at the Department of Records in the Scott County Court House in Davenport. Candy later worked for Taylor Publishing Company as a Typesetter for eight years. Richard Nelson entered Candy’s life one night at a dance. It was truly love at first sight. Richard couldn’t keep his eyes off Candy and eventually he made his way to her side. Candy and Richard were married on January 11, 1986 in Davenport, Iowa. They honeymooned at Shady Lawn Resort on the 5th Crow Wing near Nevis. In 1987 Richard’s work transferred them to Ohio where they remained for a time. They enjoyed Minnesota so much that while vacationing at Shady Lawn Resort in 1990 they purchased property on the 6th Crow Wing. They built a lake home there and moved into their new house in 1995. Candy gained employment with North Star Orthodontics as a receptionist where she remained for over nine years. Upon her retirement in 2005 the house was sold and a motor home was purchased. They had a home in Manitou, Kentucky, but much of the next five years was spent traveling. In August of 2009 Candy and Richard moved back to Minnesota buying a home in Menahga. Candy was an easy going, fun loving person who could be counted on to lend a hand when needed. She loved her dogs, camping, reading, doing cross stitch embroidery, and watching court TV shows and cooking shows. Most of all she loved her husband, children and grandchildren with all her heart.
Candy will be dearly missed by her husband, Richard Nelson of Menahga, MN; mother, Velma Spurrier of Davenport, Iowa; children, Kimberly (Tom) Kendall of Davenport, Iowa, Brad (Tanya) Schutte of Blue Grass, Iowa, Jeff (Julie) Schutte of Davenport, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Terry (Jody) Spurrier of Taylor Ridge, Illinois.
She is preceded in death by her father, Lowell Spurrier.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 7, 2011 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga, MN with Reverend Steven Bruer officiating. Special music will be “If There Were No Dreams”, “For Ever and Ever Amen” and “You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings.” Interment will be made in the Menahga City Cemetery.

It breaks my heart to read about Candy in the Enterprise. I have sinced moved from Park Rapids but I will never forget her great personality and our little chats when I called Northstar to talk to my mom. Sometimes I spent more time talking to her then I did my mom!! She will be greatly missed by both myself and my mom! God bless to her family while dealing with the loss of such a wonderful woman.

I will always have wonderful memories of Candy, we shared so many laughs and so many tears together at NorthStar. She was always such a bright light when things were rough when my Dad was sick, and then we both lost our Dads at nearly the same time. Laughter, My prayers are with you all. Please keep her love and warmth alive in your heart, she was such a special lady.

Candace was my grandma. I'm the daughter of Kim and Tom Kendall. she will greatly missed. I loved her a lot. I was talking to her every weekend. I knew she was sick but I figured she would get better like she always did. It's very hard to deal with. Words can't even describe how hard it will be. I wish she could of met my boyfriend Nick. We talked about him multiple times on the phone and she was eager to meet him. Life will be very hard knowing that i will not speak to her again. I miss her a lot. I wish i was able to attend the funeral but the weather makes it next to impossible. On Febuary !13 we will be having a memorial get together down here in Iowa. I just want everyone that reads this to know that she was a very good person and was/is loved greatly and will be missed.
LOVE kallie schutte

Candy,
I'll never forget the time my friend Bob Jones and I, (as young teenagers) hiked along the railroad tracks out to Blue Grass where you lived. We were so hungry and you made us a great lunch....God Bless and say hello to Uncle Lowell for us!
