  SHIRLEY GENEVIEVE MOTLEY
September 11, 1928 ~ November 7, 2010

Shirley Genevieve Motley, age 82, of Park Rapids, MN passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at her home near Park Rapids, MN.
Shirley was born on September 11, 1928 to George and Josephine (Cook) Weihn in Minneapolis, MN. She attended elementary and high school in the Minneapolis area. She was united in marriage to Orval Motley on August 30, 1945 in Minneapolis. This union was blessed with two children: Sandy and Randy. The young family moved to the Park Rapids area in 1949, where Shirley and Orval owned and operated Orv Motley’s garage on the east side of Park Rapids. Shirley was a long time breeder of toy poodles and shared her love of animals with her children and grandchildren; all of whom have fond memories of watching her dogs perform tricks. She also raised and bred Arabian horses and competed up to the Regional and National level in her show-ring performances. Her fondness of horses and all animals rubbed off on all her family. She had a special relationship with her animals and it was evident in the way she talked to them, about them and shared them with others. She was a long term member of the American Kennel Club and the Tall Pine Riders Saddle Club; where she held many different positions. After Orval passed away in 2005, Shirley designed her “dream home” on the outskirts of Park Rapids and moved there in 2006 and has resided there ever since. In her spare time, Shirley enjoyed fishing, casino trips, camping, playing cards (especially poker) and spending time with her family and friends. She always had great stories to tell and wonderful morals to teach.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sandy (Don) Buerkley of Cumberland, WI; son, Randy (Diane) Motley of Maplewood, MN; six grandchildren: Scott (Sarah) Buerkley, Michele Baker, Dana (Dale) Hanson, Jennifer Hoover, Charlie Allen and Tim (Lisa) Allen; six great grandchildren: Kayla Baker, Chris Baker, Dustin Hanson, Danielle Hanson, Ross Buerkley and Shane Buerkley and many other relatives and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orval and brother, Woody.
A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held at the C’Mon Inn Banquet Room starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2010.

JACKIE REHM
A belated message of sympathy to all of the Motley
family. I have many wonderful memories of riding
and enjoying the friendships of the Saddle Club
Crew of which your family was such a big part of.
I don't think one could forget all the hours of practice for the tandem bareback class...Shirley had us riding to perfection--well almost :)
I wish for you time to heal, strength for each day
and comfort in a world of wonderful memories. I hope it helps to know that we will all hold Shirley
in a special place in our hearts and that her pastures are now forever green.

My deepest sympathy in the loss of Shirley. Shirley helped me at a young age enjoy the love of beautiful horses by allowing me the opportunity to enjoy the quiet, yet powerful beauty of her elegant Arabians at her farm in Park Rapids. My best to each of you in her passing.

Add your condolence.
